What doctor means?

The definition of doctor is a person who has obtained the last academic degree in the university, after having defended a doctoral thesis.

But it also means a person who is dedicated to curing or preventing disease, even if he or she does not have a doctorate.

Synonyms of doctor are: professor, theologian, facultative.

Many professional degrees use the term “doctor” in the title, such as Juris Doctor and Doctor of Medicine, but these degrees do not always have an independent research component or require a thesis and should not be confused with Ph.D./ /D.Phil./Ed.Phil./Ed.D.Ed./D.Ed./ degrees or other research doctorates.

At some universities, honorary doctorates are also awarded as special recognition to that person for his or her academic or social contributions to the university.

  2. Professional doctorates or Doctor’s degree-professional practice (professional degree).
  3. Doctor’s degree – other (Honorary doctorate).

The Doctorate’s degree research/scholarship is defined as “A Ph.D. or other doctor’s degree that requires advanced work beyond the master’s level, including the preparation and defense of a dissertation based on original research, or the planning and execution of an original project demonstrating substantial artistic or scholarly achievement”. The research doctorate is also called PhD degree.

The doctorate’s degree professional pratice is conferred upon completion of a program providing the knowledge and skills for the recognition, credential, or license required for professional practice but is defined as a professional degree that lawyers and physicians complete to practice in their vocations.

The Doctor’s degree-professional practice is unofficially known as “doctor’s degree”.

What’s the difference between a PhD (research doctorate) and a professional doctorate?

The main difference between PhD and professional doctorate programs is the type of research that is done. In the phd degree is created and expanded knowledge in research and theory of a given field.

This is why it is known as original research. In the professional doctorate  the knowledge is broadened and it is applied to solve problems of a concrete professional field. This is why it is known as applied research.

We can also say that a PhD degree prepares you to teach, while a professional doctorate prepares you more for a professional career.

How many credits needed for doctorate degree?

Usually, a doctorate’s program (4 years) need from 90 to 120 semester credits of study or 30 to 40 college courses. Some doctoral programs require a research thesis or end-of-course paper.

How many years is a doctorate’s degree?

A doctorate degree is 3 years of full-time duration, if you already have a master’s degree. They are 4 or 5 years full-time if you do it after the bachelor’s degree.

The student must complete the doctorate’s program and meet all requirements to obtain the degree.
